Augmented Reality is pretty amazing. You’ve probably already seen the NY Subway app or the BMW Z4 3D Experience, but have you ever seen an app that lets you try on glasses and buy them from your phone? I haven’t, which is why I was so excited to see this new app from AR pioneers Total Immersion.
As you can see in the video, uses iPhone 4′s front facing camera to scan your face, make the necessary adjustments and then try on virtual glasses. You can try on multiple glasses and buy them with ease via their mobile commerce platform. You can even find the closest store to pick up your pair of glasses. Plus, you can share photos of you in your virtual glasses with friends to get a second opinion. I want to see Gunnar Optiks on this app – their glasses are the best.
Can’t wait to see this app developed for more of my favorite brands.
New Recovery Commercial – Eminem
The music industry isn’t what it used to be. In fact, Thom Yorke of Radiohead proclaims the labels have less than a year to live. In the day of the internet and direct to consumer distribution, it’s tough for a record label to prove its worth. They once stood as the gatekeeper for distribution. Now, they are a mediocre marketing company, leaving artists to fend for themselves.
One artist I will never worry about in terms of spreading the word is Eminem.
He is a talented artist with lyrics that resonate to millions around the globe and the ability to repeatedly deliver quality work again and again.
He is a talented showman who understands the public. He is able to be transparent at times, recluse when he needs to be and in front of the camera when it matters most.
Finally, he is a great marketer. His showman skills and ability to laugh at pop culture enables him to always shock and awe the public. In a day when the music industry relies on posters, MTV shows, poor product placement and a publicity tour to promote a new album, Eminem takes another route. He goes back to the basics with a direct-response TV ad…of course, there’s a twist.
He brings back the controversial Shamwow spokesman, Vince Shlomi to promote it. Fresh out of jail, Vince has been away long enough for us to laugh about it, but not long enough for us to forget about him.
I love this commercial, because it is DIFFERENT. If it were any other artist, Interscope would kill this idea. Fortunately, Eminem has proven himself and continues to do so every day.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me…I keep listening to summer songs. Maybe it’s a longing for warm weather. It’s July in SF and we are under deep fog.
This Cookin Soul mix of “Summer in the City” by Quincy Jones features Jay Z and Lil Wayne laying it down. Download it here or watch the video above…you won’t be disappointed.

It’s a beautiful Summer day in NYC and you’re out for a stroll. As you turn the corner, there it is…a piano. It’s not doing anything, just sitting there with a sign that says, “play me.”
What do you do?
Well, as Lucie Wright points out in this presentation, you engage. You enjoy yourself. You let down your New York living guard for a moment and take it all in. A moment captured and documented for Ethographic Research.
I am glad there are people like Lucie Wright to remind us that given the chance – we’d all like to play the piano for a moment, take part in a random dance or play like a child in a fire hydrant fountain.

Do you remember the Nike Women’s Ad back in 2005 that began MY BUTT IS BIG?
It was a good ad, focusing on the beauty of the rump and helping women with them to OWN it. In case you missed it, here it is again…

I liked it then because it celebrated the real woman…not the one on the magazine cover. Plus, it fits Nike. Nike is athletic apparel with a tag line that says it all – JUST DO IT. With the 2010 version of this ad, they updated the photo to include the entire model and kept the copy the same…

I like these ads. I like any ads that remind women they are beautiful, no matter their size, shape or color. I have a niece and remind her of her beauty on a regular basis. Soon, she’ll be bombarded with videos, billboards, magazines and more which create the illusion of beauty.
That’s all it is, an illusion – an illusion which was eloquently displayed in a Dove ad titled EVOLUTION from a few years back.
Here it is for your enjoyment:

When was the last time you did something that scared you?
I tell myself to do something that scares me every day, but in reality, I probably only follow through once a month.
When I saw this posting on the top rejection letters, it made me laugh and think…why not go for it? Why not put myself out there more – in my work, in my hobbies and in my love life.
I chose this image from the ODDEE Rejection Letter post because it showcase something interesting. Sometimes, you can be rejected for being honest…perhaps too honest. It’s funny isn’t it. We all say we want someone who is honest and to the point…yet, we actually want someone who is in the middle.
This guy answered his questions with an edgy, honest answer and got shut down. Some may be wrought with despair. The thing is…I don’t think he’ll be worried about not getting into eHarmony. I don’t think he will reapply there, he will probably go somewhere new. We should all go about things this way – be yourself, tell the truth, if someone doesn’t like the truth…move on.

Any song with this type of hook wins for me:
“And she spoke words that would melt in your hands,
And she spoke words of wisdom”
I really like this track Words Of Wisdom and have been looping it all morning. The Two Door Cinema sample fits in nicely –producer RJF is 2 for 2. Hoodie Allen has a good way about him, I don’t know what else to say…other than: listen to it yourself and be the judge:

I actually found this on icanhasinternets.com and not Rolling Stone. Nonetheless, I love it…mainly, because I love music.
Having worked around musicians and DJs, there is a definite attitude musicians have towards the music labels… and over the past few years, it hasn’t gotten any better.
The thing is, when you’re antiquated you have two choices – innovate or ride it out to the end. The music industry opted for the latter and it has made all the difference in the world.
I suppose it’s to be expected. These labels are not made up of passionate musicians who had business savvy and did it for the love of music. The music labels that make the industry are corporations with their passion and duty devoted to money. They are the BPs and GEs of the music space – they file a 10K, report to shareholders and look at artists for ROI.
So…when the internet came along, instead of embracing the new, they opted to sue.
Napster caught them off guard and instead of looking at Napster as music lovers sharing tracks and their love of music…they looked at them as common day thieves, stealing their product off the shelves.
And why not?
The music industry was built on organizing these artists, marketing them and distributing TANGIBLE products for a profit.
They look at music as a product, a TANGIBLE item. It is was packaged in a case, wrapped in plastic and even had a bar code. You can could hold it, feel it and profit from it.
We the music lovers look at music as love, heartache, sorrow and every emotion evoked with the sound of a voice, a guitar, a beat…it is INTANGIBLE to us. We connect with the artist through the song – we fall in love, say goodbye and dance our first dance as a married couple to music. It DEFINES us and our memories in so many ways.
The internet allowed us to share music and our passions in ways we had never dreamed of. We were sharing our libraries, our most intimate moments with each other via music….
You already know the outcome of the music label’s war against the internet. Their penchant for slapping lawsuits against music lovers, shutting down peer to peer companies and locking down everything digital did something else…it locked out those lovers of music.
The people who built their mansions were now looked upon as the enemy…and it tore apart the industry.
When you are no longer worried about taking care of the customer…
When you are not worried about fulfilling a need of man…
When you no longer care about the quality of your product…
YOU ARE AS GOOD AS DEAD.
For now, the labels will continue to worry about getting other pieces of the artist – percentages of merchandise sales, ticket sales and any type of ventures into other industries…such as consumer electronics.
Thom Yorke may not be correct about his prediction of the music industry collapse within months, but he is correct in seeing a major change taking place.
Whatever the outcome, as Rolling Stone points out…the industry brought it upon itself.

The internet is your friend.
Need proof? Well, suppose you’ve been diagnosed with testicular cancer and you want to raise money and awareness. In the past, you might hold a local event or do a local TV commercial…you might even try your hand at direct mail.
Today, you can do soooo much more. Case in point – “The Guy At Home In His Underwear,” which involves:

For 25 days, the Mark is turning on the webcams and living in his underwear for all the world to see. For every Facebook fan on the Guy At Home In His Underwear page, Stanfield’s Underwear will donate $1, up to $25,000.
How many people are going to want to see a guy in his underwear sit at the computer, watch hockey and loaf around? In only 6 days, there have been close to 19,000 Facebook fans alone with a live chat session taking place this morning. Plus, they have some evil donation challenges…if you match certain donation goals, you can watch as Mark has to fry bacon (no shirt), get his chest waxed or even get a tattoo.
Head over to the site yourself and be sure to do your part in raising money for testicular cancer.
Did you see Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop?
That movie made me appreciate Banksy in a new light. I respect the fact that this guy does disruptive street art for a living, but the movie brought to light his sense of humor. Yesterday, Bansky struck again…in the form of the Simpsons couch gag.
Watch and enjoy -
As the Wooster Collective explains it, “In what has to be one of the most closely guarded secrets in TV history, the “couch gag” opening of tonight’s episode of The Simpsons was storyboarded and directed by none other than Banksy. It’s the first time an artist has been invited to storyboard part of the show and when you see it, you’ll be shocked that it made it past the network executives.”

Edelman, the Intl PR Agency, wanted to get inside the heads of the Millenials. So, what did they do? They conducted a study and started a Tumblr site to gather thoughts, info and insights into the head of the Millenial – what they call 8095′s because they are born between 1980 and 1995.

The Internet hasn’t been around that long, but if there were anyone qualified to write a book about it, Google fits the bill.
Enjoy the read.
