A Year in the life of a Geo-Based Social Network Giant Foursquare – 2010 by the numbers

A couple years ago, GPS enabled Smartphones starting rolling out in a major way. While it was great for getting from A to B, it also provided a unique opportunity for a business model – a social network based upon your location.

Enter Foursquare…

Founded in 2009 at South by Southwest Interactive, Foursquare is a location-based mobile platform that lets you use your phone to “check in” and share your location with friends. “Check in” enough and you’re awarded badges and may find yourself Mayor of your local coffee shop.

So, did the idea catch on?

Well, the proof is in the numbers. Below, you’ll find the infographic that Foursquare published.

Here are the cliff notes numbers:

  • 6 million users
  • over 381 million “check ins”
  • 3400% growth

Here is the infographic and a link to ReadWriteWeb’s article on this feat.

Game Changer – Augmented Reality Mobile Commerce App

Augmented Reality is pretty amazing. You’ve probably already seen the NY Subway app or the BMW Z4 3D Experience, but have you ever seen an app that lets you try on glasses and buy them from your phone? I haven’t, which is why I was so excited to see this new app from AR pioneers Total Immersion.

As you can see in the video, uses iPhone 4′s front facing camera to scan your face, make the necessary adjustments and then try on virtual glasses. You can try on multiple glasses and buy them with ease via their mobile commerce platform. You can even find the closest store to pick up your pair of glasses. Plus, you can share photos of you in your virtual glasses with friends to get a second opinion. I want to see Gunnar Optiks on this app – their glasses are the best.

Can’t wait to see this app developed for more of my favorite brands.

Eminem goes direct with Mr Shamwow!

New Recovery Commercial – Eminem

The music industry isn’t what it used to be. In fact, Thom Yorke of Radiohead proclaims the labels have less than a year to live. In the day of the internet and direct to consumer distribution, it’s tough for a record label to prove its worth. They once stood as the gatekeeper for distribution. Now, they are a mediocre marketing company, leaving artists to fend for themselves.

One artist I will never worry about in terms of spreading the word is Eminem.

He is a talented artist with lyrics that resonate to millions around the globe and the ability to repeatedly deliver quality work again and again.

He is a talented showman who understands the public. He is able to be transparent at times, recluse when he needs to be and in front of the camera when it matters most.

Finally, he is a great marketer. His showman skills and ability to laugh at pop culture enables him to always shock and awe the public. In a day when the music industry relies on posters, MTV shows, poor product placement and a publicity tour to promote a new album, Eminem takes another route. He goes back to the basics with a direct-response TV ad…of course, there’s a twist.

He brings back the controversial Shamwow spokesman, Vince Shlomi to promote it. Fresh out of jail, Vince has been away long enough for us to laugh about it, but not long enough for us to forget about him.

I love this commercial, because it is DIFFERENT. If it were any other artist, Interscope would kill this idea. Fortunately, Eminem has proven himself and continues to do so every day.

An experiment in connecting people…New York Style

Lucie Wright – Encouraging Human Moments

View more presentations from Tim Stock.

It’s a beautiful Summer day in NYC and you’re out for a stroll. As you turn the corner, there it is…a piano. It’s not doing anything, just sitting there with a sign that says, “play me.”

What do you do?

Well, as Lucie Wright points out in this presentation, you engage. You enjoy yourself. You let down your New York living guard for a moment and take it all in. A moment captured and documented for Ethographic Research.

I am glad there are people like Lucie Wright to remind us that given the chance – we’d all like to play the piano for a moment, take part in a random dance or play like a child in a fire hydrant fountain.

“My Butt Is Big” Nike Women’s Ad Gets Revived

Do you remember the Nike Women’s Ad back in 2005 that began MY BUTT IS BIG?
It was a good ad, focusing on the beauty of the rump and helping women with them to OWN it. In case you missed it, here it is again…

I liked it then because it celebrated the real woman…not the one on the magazine cover. Plus, it fits Nike. Nike is athletic apparel with a tag line that says it all – JUST DO IT. With the 2010 version of this ad, they updated the photo to include the entire model and kept the copy the same…

I like these ads. I like any ads that remind women they are beautiful, no matter their size, shape or color. I have a niece and remind her of her beauty on a regular basis. Soon, she’ll be bombarded with videos, billboards, magazines and more which create the illusion of beauty.

That’s all it is, an illusion – an illusion which was eloquently displayed in a Dove ad titled EVOLUTION from a few years back.

Here it is for your enjoyment:

How to get rejected by the written word

When was the last time you did something that scared you?

I tell myself to do something that scares me every day, but in reality, I probably only follow through once a month.

When I saw this posting on the top rejection letters, it made me laugh and think…why not go for it? Why not put myself out there more – in my work, in my hobbies and in my love life.

I chose this image from the ODDEE Rejection Letter post because it showcase something interesting. Sometimes, you can be rejected for being honest…perhaps too honest. It’s funny isn’t it. We all say we want someone who is honest and to the point…yet, we actually want someone who is in the middle.

This guy answered his questions with an edgy, honest answer and got shut down. Some may be wrought with despair. The thing is…I don’t think he’ll be worried about not getting into eHarmony. I don’t think he will reapply there, he will probably go somewhere new. We should all go about things this way – be yourself, tell the truth, if someone doesn’t like the truth…move on.

How to start a meme

The reason I am writing this post is because a lot of people were duped (including myself) by the Quitter Dry Erase Girl, who apparently quit her job with a bang. One day after the hoax, thechive.com came out to tell us we were pawns in their little game.

It was a great game – how do you start a meme? The Chive proved if you add a couple ingredients, like a hot girl, the name of  a popular site and game, throw in a made up acronym and call it NEWS…well, a lot of people will take to it.

I suppose before we discuss “How to start a meme,” we should discuss what a meme is in the first place.

A meme is defined by Wikipedia as: “a concept that spreads swiftly via the Internet.”

That’s it. An idea or concept that people connect with and spread it across the internet for all the world to see. Let’s go through an example to bring you up to speed:

KEANU IS SAD meme – a photo of Keanu looking sad on a park bench is on the web. People open up photoshop and start photoshopping Keanu into random photos and poses….POOF! You’ve got a cool little meme.

Yesterday, thechive.com put out a story about a girl dumping her boss and using a dry erase board as a final farewell to give him one last message. The story spread like wildfire.

Today, we learned it was all a hoax. BUT, thechive.com was kind enough to give a tutorial on HOW TO START A MEME.

Rather than lift every word from their post, I am linking to it HERE.

Enjoy!

Words Of Wisdom – Hoodie Allen Single

Any song with this type of hook wins for me:

“And she spoke words that would melt in your hands,
And she spoke words of wisdom”

I really like this track Words Of Wisdom and have been looping it all morning. The Two Door Cinema sample fits in nicely –producer RJF is 2 for 2. Hoodie Allen has a good way about him, I don’t know what else to say…other than: listen to it yourself and be the judge:

Rolling Stone Issues A Thank You Letter To Record Execs

I actually found this on icanhasinternets.com and not Rolling Stone. Nonetheless, I love it…mainly, because I love music.

Having worked around musicians and DJs, there is a definite attitude musicians have towards the music labels… and over the past few years, it hasn’t gotten any better.

The thing is, when you’re antiquated you have two choices – innovate or ride it out to the end. The music industry opted for the latter and it has made all the difference in the world.

I suppose it’s to be expected. These labels are not made up of passionate musicians who had business savvy and did it for the love of music. The music labels that make the industry are corporations with their passion and duty devoted to money. They are the BPs and GEs of the music space – they file a 10K, report to shareholders and look at artists for ROI.

So…when the internet came along, instead of embracing the new, they opted to sue.

Napster caught them off guard and instead of looking at Napster as music lovers sharing tracks and their love of music…they looked at them as common day thieves, stealing their product off the shelves.

And why not?

The music industry was built on organizing these artists, marketing them and distributing TANGIBLE products for a profit.

They look at music as a product, a TANGIBLE item. It is was packaged in a case, wrapped in plastic and even had a bar code. You can could hold it, feel it and profit from it.

We the music lovers look at music as love, heartache, sorrow and every emotion evoked with the sound of a voice, a guitar, a beat…it is INTANGIBLE to us. We connect with the artist through the song – we fall in love, say goodbye and dance our first dance as a married couple to music. It DEFINES us and our memories in so many ways.

The internet allowed us to share music and our passions in ways we had never dreamed of. We were sharing our libraries, our most intimate moments with each other via music….

You already know the outcome of the music label’s war against the internet. Their penchant for slapping lawsuits against music lovers, shutting down peer to peer companies and locking down everything digital did something else…it locked out those lovers of music.

The people who built their mansions were now looked upon as the enemy…and it tore apart the industry.

When you are no longer worried about taking care of the customer…

When you are not worried about fulfilling a need of man…

When you no longer care about the quality of your product…

YOU ARE AS GOOD AS DEAD.

For now, the labels will continue to worry about getting other pieces of the artist – percentages of merchandise sales, ticket sales and any type of ventures into other industries…such as consumer electronics.

Thom Yorke may not be correct about his prediction of the music industry collapse within months, but he is correct in seeing a major change taking place.

Whatever the outcome, as Rolling Stone points out…the industry brought it upon itself.

How to use YouTube – the French Connection Youtique Example

How long have brands been trying to figure out how to use YouTube to build their brand or drive sales?

I would say since inception, and there are very few who have done it well. So, when I saw the Adverblog post on the new YouTube channel by French Connection, I had to investigate for myself. The channel is called Youtique, and it is an amazing step forward in using YouTube to drive sales, interact with consumers and build the brand.

Designed by Poke London, Youtique uses the YouTube pop-up buttons to create an incredible experience for the consumer. In just a few clicks, Youtique lets buyers decide an ensemble and buy it. Here is a screenshot giving you a glimpse:

Youtique

As you can see, you can change looks on a whim or buy an outfit with the click of a button.

How did they pull this off? Why hasn’t anyone else? As Fast Company points out in their post:

Though the pop-ups traditionally only link to other YouTube videos, FCUK has made an arrangement with YouTube to allow certain buttons to lead directly to the FCUK site. After FCUK’s stylist Louise Roe makes a case for buying a sequined top or a gold-tone pendant necklace, the video presents a model who stands and sways for several seconds wearing the outfit in question. Her different items of clothing become annotated with a “buy” button that the viewer can click to be taken directly to the FCUK page selling the item in question.”

YouTube as a direct sales channel has just been officially launched…I can’t wait to see what’s next.

How to turn your tweet into a harmonized song – Orange’s Twitter Campaign

I was on the PSFK site reading a great post from a beautiful brand strategist.

What was the post about you ask?

Remember those singing telegrams?

Neither do I, but your parents might.

Well, the day of the singing telegram has been twitterized, courtesy of Orange. That’s right…modern technology has evolved and now your tweets can be turned into songs.

According to the Orange site, here is what you have to do:

  • You tweet your messages adding #singingtweetagrams from now until Thursday
  • We pick the best ones as they come in, and send them straight to the studio
  • The Rockabellas turn them into lovely little songs within a few hours
  • We’ll let you know when your tweet is ready so you can come here and send it!
  • Here’s a snapshot of the site:

This great idea and site was put together by the Poke London group. They’re same crew that brought you Youtique….those guys are busy being disruptive.

The statistics are pretty incredible, with over $1 Billion in revenues expected from social gaming and approximately 55% of social gamers being women.

McDonald’s digital marketing team is paying attention. They teamed up with Zynga to create a branded farm for the day and like all first movers, they have garnered some great press and reviews.

The Power Of Facebook, Webcams & A Man With Testicular Cancer

    The internet is your friend.

Need proof? Well, suppose you’ve been diagnosed with testicular cancer and you want to raise money and awareness. In the past, you might hold a local event or do a local TV commercial…you might even try your hand at direct mail.

Today, you can do soooo much more. Case in point – “The Guy At Home In His Underwear,” which involves:

Guy At Home In His Underwear

For 25 days, the Mark is turning on the webcams and living in his underwear for all the world to see. For every Facebook fan on the Guy At Home In His Underwear pageStanfield’s Underwear will donate $1, up to $25,000.

How many people are going to want to see a guy in his underwear sit at the computer, watch hockey and loaf around? In only 6 days, there have been close to 19,000 Facebook fans alone with a live chat session taking place this morning. Plus, they have some evil donation challenges…if you match certain donation goals, you can watch as Mark has to fry bacon (no shirt), get his chest waxed or even get a tattoo.

Head over to the site yourself and be sure to do your part in raising money for testicular cancer.

Banksy does the Simpsons intro…and its dark, very dark

Did you see Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop?

That movie made me appreciate Banksy in a new light. I respect the fact that this guy does disruptive street art for a living, but the movie brought to light his sense of humor. Yesterday, Bansky struck again…in the form of the Simpsons couch gag.

    Watch and enjoy -

As the Wooster Collective explains it, “In what has to be one of the most closely guarded secrets in TV history, the “couch gag” opening of tonight’s episode of The Simpsons was storyboarded and directed by none other than Banksy. It’s the first time an artist has been invited to storyboard part of the show and when you see it, you’ll be shocked that it made it past the network executives.”

How To Lure Facebook Likes….Corona Light Makes You The Star Of Your Own Billboard For A Facebook LIKE

    Corona Light

At the end of the day, we all just want some attention.

A lot of marketers forget it because they are too focused on the latest technology fad or coming up with some video they deem viral. Corona Light opted for something more to the point, and it is great.

All you have to do is LIKE Corona Light on Facebook and your beautiful face will appear on a 150 foot billboard in Times Square. It’s not an entirely seamless execution though because you still have to upload a photo manually instead of pulling from your Facebook account. Regardless, this should be fun and I can’t wait to see when the billboard runs in Times Square, from November 8th through December 6th.

It’s not an entirely new concept but it is a FRESH idea…especially in this day and age when technology seems to matter more in marketing than the message.

What are you waiting for? Head over there now.

    How to hide a battleship

    Battleship Camo

I came upon this in my Google Reader and was reminded of something…there is no such thing as a boring project. It all depends on your level of creativity, passion and persistence.
Case in point – the camouflaged battleship. The boat above is from World War I. That’s right, World War I and it looks like some modern artist piece. Instead, this paint job was used to try and confuse or disguise the boat – giving the enemy an illusion of size, depth, etc….

How to bridge the gap between the real world and the digital frontier – QR Codes Get Smart

Have you ever seen or scanned a QR code? You know, it’s a little box that looks like a bar code or something similar and is generally found on advertisements. You can scan it with your Smartphone (iPhone, BlackBerry, Android) and be directed to a site. It looks like this:

    Likify

As an SF resident, I’ve seen QR codes placed in large floor advertisements and billboards. The problem I have is that it usually just takes you to a website…and frankly, I don’t feel like exploring a website on my Samsung Epic. I surf the web on my 15.4″ screen, I download music, play games and keep up with news on my Smartphone.

So, when I read the TechCrunch article “Slap a QR Code On That Product So That People Can Like It” I immediately had to investigate. A Belgium company by the name of Boondoggle Lifelabs just launched Likify, it’s a service allowing you to create a QR code you can place on ads or buildings that lets consumers LIKE your brand on Facebook…right from their Smartphone.

It’s a cool concept, take the basic QR experience, but don’t push consumers to a mobile site that is cumbersome. With today’s QR code campaigns, I have never scanned a code and gone back to the site when I got home. Usually, my entire relationship with the brand was a matter of minutes.  Using Likify, the QR code scan is just the BEGINNING of the relationship. You see the code, scan it and LIKE the brand. When you get home and log on to Facebook, you are connected with that brand. It’s smart, and it has the power to last.

As you can see below, Nike in Belgium is using this service to get runners to LIKE their Facebook page in a matter of seconds. Here is the storefront with the code in the window:

    Nike Store Belgium Likify

As a consumer, you can walk by, scan the code and LIKE the Facebook page as seen here:

    Nike Phone

I went on Likify and signed up for an account. Within a few minutes, I had created several QR codes for my clients. It’s not as seamless as it could be, but I hope with time they improve the experience.

Create your QR code today and feel free to email it to me.
